Flower Power: GBBD August 2011

May Dream Gardens invites everyone, on the fifteenth of the month, to share the blooms found in their gardens.  With our ongoing heat & drought, flowers are pretty rare in my garden.

Established Plants

Water plants account for almost all my blooms.  The Water Poppy (Hydrocleys nymphoides) has taken over the pond and puts out plenty of its yellow blooms.

Rising high above the pond surface, the Aztec Arrowhead (Sagittaria montevidensis) has a nice cluster of brilliant white blooms that shine in the filtered sunshine.

Potted Plants

Only a single bloom remains on the Ground Orchid (Spathoglottis plicata).  Its small cluster of purple flowers has been fading, but at least this one is still hanging in there.

Flower Wannabes

The berries of the American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) are just starting to change from green to their deep purple color.

Be sure to visit May Dream Gardens to see what flowers are shining in other's gardens.

  1. You always have the prettiest unusual blooms in your garden. That is really saying something that the orchid is still flowering. Scott Ogden told me it really doesn't work in Austin. He was wrong. Happy GBBD.

  2. I'm really missing the flowers of my Aztec Arrowhead this year. While the plant is alive it's only pushed out a couple of leaves....thanks for sharing yours!

  4. Enjoyed your blooms and I sure hope you folks get some rain and plenty of it soon, I know you need it. I like your Callicarpa beauty berry bush, I grow a variety called Issai but I'd like to try your 'Americana' too.....thanks for inviting me into your garden and I hope you'll visit us soon yourself.

  5. Good blooms. I like the Beautyberry. It looks like it's holding up under the drought. I think the deer eat it, though.
    Stay cool...

  6. Oh I love callicarpa (plus it's kind of got my name in it). Your phot's are great. A day of torrential rain meant I finally had time enough to sit and do a post for GBBD, so now I'm out enjoying what everyone else is growing.

  7. Your August blossoms make me want a pond more than ever. I had a single rain lily bloom on Tuesday after Monday's 0.01 inch of rain, and I thought about all your rain lilies blooming their heads off in June and July!

  9. Lancashire: The ground orchid seems to work in a pot; all the ones I planted in the ground were wiped out by our hard winter.

Danger: My Aztec Arrowhead has been pretty dependable - it seems to love the heat.

Larry: I usually don't see the Beautyberry color this early - thinking the heat/drought is causing early ripening.

Paul: I'll have to check out the Issai variety.

Linda: Deer might be interested- but fortunately my garden is pretty inaccessible to them (though the Mockingbirds tend to gobble up the berries pretty quick).

Cally: "Torrential rain" - my jealously knows no bounds!

Caroline: Spotted a few recent blooms on my rain lilies once again - though they look more tired than happy.

    Cassy: Thanks for visiting.
